A survey of IBQAP data of aesthetic procedures from 2001 to 2011 revealed 414 cases of VTE, 58% of which occurred following abdominoplasty. Predictors of VTE were age greater than 40 years and BMI greater than 25 kg/m2.   95.5% of the VTEs identified occurred in patients whose Caprini risk assessment score was between 2 and 8, which would not be an indication for chemoprophylaxis according to current recommendations.

Demystifying the “July Effect” in Plastic Surgery: A Multi-Institutional Study

Jordan T Blough, BS Sumanas W Jordan, MD Gildasio S De Oliveira, Jr., MD Michael M Vu, BS John YS Kim, MD

Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Volume 38, Issue 2, 17 February 2018, Pages 212–224.

5967 plastic surgery procedures involving residents were divided into those occurring during the first academic quarter and those occurring during the remainder of the year. No differences were seen in complications or length of hospital stay, but a slight increase in operative time by 10 minutes per procedure was seen in the first quarter.  Despite heavy coverage in popular media, the “July effect” of new trainees does not seem to impact quality in plastic surgery.
