Mark A. Codner MD was serving as the President of the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeonswhen he passed away unexpectedly on June 4, 2020. Mark was an Atlanta native and lived and practiced in that community for many years. He performed his medical training at Emory University, Cornell Medical Center, and Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City. He also completed dual aesthetic and oculoplastic fellowship training with Drs. Baker, Gordon, and Stuzin in Miami and Dr. Sonny McCord in Atlanta.As a Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at Emory University, Dr. Codner authored 10 textbooks, over 100 peer-reviewed articles & invited book chapters, and presented over 200 lectures worldwide as an educator in his field of plastic surgery. Over the last 20 years, he was the Program Chairman of both the Atlanta Oculoplastic Symposium and the Atlanta Breast Symposium, which brings leaders in Plastic Surgery together from around the world to collaborate. Dr. Codner was awarded the prestigious Sherrell Aston Award by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Moreover, he was invited to perform live surgery all over the world in countries such as Egypt, Brazil, Canada, Peru, Belgium and Paris.
Dr. Codner generously dedicated countless hours to the teaching of Residents and Fellows. He was an innovator and pushed the boundaries to educate surgeons. He was honored to have personally mentored 48 Fellows throughout his career. Dr. Codner was influential in developing the SESPRS Aesthetic and Breast Fellowship sponsored yearly and the Society will honor him by naming this Fellowship after him - The Mark A. Codner Aesthetic and Breast Fellowship.
The Society, along with the insightfulness of his wife Jane, established The Mark Codner Educational Fund (501c3) in June of 2020. This Fund will be used to further support the Mark A. Codner Aesthetic and Breast Fellowship and other educational pursuits of fellows or residents as defined by the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (SESPRS) Board. Please join us in celebrating Mark’s life and career by contributing to this educational fund.
