Dr. Wendel graduated with honors from Wabash College and received his M.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine where he was elected membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. He completed his General Surgery prerequisites at the University of South Florida. His Plastic Surgery Fellowship took place at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
